Sunless tanning has come a very long way in the last decade. Gone are the days of bright orange streaky tans with an awful lingering smell. But in an age where there are so many different self-tanning products on the market, how do you know which ones are right for you? There are many factors you need to consider when looking for a new tan, which shade do you like? Is formula important to you? Are you on a tight budget?

Luckily I have tried out countless fake tans, and I have ranked the best self-tanning products in 2020 currently on the market! I have chosen my absolute favourites from all kinds of shades, formulas, prices and styles.

Bondi Sands Aero Self Tanning Mousse – Dark

BEST FOR: Super-dark Colour and Quick Dry Finish

Formula: Super-quick drying mousse (with guide colour)

Shade: A dark deep bronze finish

Development Time: 6+ hours

Cheapest Price: £12.99 on Amazon

The Bondi Sands Aero range is new for 2020! The Australian brand is already loved by many (myself included) for their streak-free flawless formulas, deep dark hues, and trademark coconut scent. But now, we can experience all the wonderful perks of this range, without the fake tan stickiness after application. The Aero range is a new specially aerated mousse that, once applied, dries super quickly, and leaves no sticky residue. So you can apply, throw on your clothes, and go! This tan is perfect for people who want a darker tan, and like to self-tan in the day bur don’t want to feel sticky while doing so. Just remember to avoid getting your skin wet while it is developing.

Isle of Paradise Glow Clear Range

BEST FOR: Natural Colour and Fuss-Free Application

Formula: Quick Drying Mousse (Clear)

Shade: Light, Medium, or Dark

Development Time: 4-6 hours

Cheapest Price: £15.00 on Amazon

Now technically, this range was introduced in 2019, not 2020, but I had to include it because I absolutely love this range and I have been so impressed by it. Because it is a clear tan, it works amazingly to throw on before you leave the house, as there’s no guide colour so nobody will even tell you’ve got it on. However, the fact that there’s no guide colour can also be a curse as well as a blessing, as it makes it far easier to miss patches. For this reason I wouldn’t recommend it for a beginner/first time tanner. One of the best things about this tan is the colour; it is one of the few tans on the market which is based on a violet pigment which neutralises orange, this makes it amazing for people who are worried about having a natural looking tan, and is also a reason why I recommended it in my article: The Best Fake Tans for Fair Skin. I love this tan because it’s so fuss-free, you simply apply, go about your day, and within 6 hours your tan will develop into a beautiful bronze colour. It gives a wonderful streak-free flawless finish, and doesn’t cling to dry patches.

Clarins Self-Tanning Milky Lotion

BEST FOR: Dry Skin or Mature Skin

Formula: Super Nourishing Cream (Goes on Clear)

Shade: A light sun-kissed glow

Development Time: 4-6 hours

Cheapest Price: £23.52 on Amazon

You’d be forgiven for mistaking this tan for a moisturiser. Its creamy texture and white hue nourishes skin upon application and provides deep hydration for hours after application. Because of this, I highly recommend this product for people who have exceptionally dry skin and struggle with getting a seamless tan application due to product becoming patchy on dry areas. The colour payoff with this tan is lighter than the first suggestions in this list, and therefore is more suitable for those who are after a light sun kissed glow as opposed to a deep colour. Saying this, this product is easily buildable, and if you wanted to achieve a darker colour you could re-apply it the day after initial application, and repeat until you’ve achieved your desired colour.

St. Tropez Self Tan Purity Water Gel

BEST FOR: Hybrid Product- Gorgeous tan and Plump Skin!

Formula: Water Gel (Clear)

Shade: Medium Golden Bronze

Development Time: 3-8 Hours

Cheapest Price: £19.36 from Amazon

This product has taken the market by storm due to its dual-purpose USP. This tan is infused with Hylauronic Acid to hydrate and plump the skin which achieving a gorgeous medium bronze glow. A unique hybrid, this product is fantastic for anybody who loves to be tanned but is also into their skincare products. It’s a clear water gel that is dry to the touch a few minutes after application, and leaves the skin feeling plump and hydrated. It will develop into a medium tan 3-8 hours after application, and has a wonderful tropical smell, so you can go about your day without smelling like biscuits!

Rimmel Sunshimmer Water Resistant Wash Off Instant Tan

BEST FOR: Instant Application and Budget Friendly

Formula: A smudge and water resistant cream

Shade: Buildable

Development Time: Instant! Apply and go

Cheapest Price: £6.65 from Amazon

This is another one that technically isn’t new to 2020, however I couldn’t not include an instant tan, and there are none on the market that are better or more budget friendly than this one. This tan is perfect if you’re in a rush and need a quick throw-on tan that works in an instant. It is also a great choice for topping up an existing tan that’s maybe a few days old, or evening out a tan that is fading badly. There are so many uses for this product that I can’t not rank it in the best self-tanning products in 2020. And the best bit? Simply wash it off with soap and water when you are done with it. Perfect.

And that concludes our list of best self-tanning products in 2020. With the current range of tans on the market, there’s something for everyone, no matter what your budget or desired look.
